From Aspiring Attorney to Legal Operations Professional: Building a Career Through Problem Solving

For many people who enter the legal field, the path appears straightforward: attend law school, pass the bar, and practice law. For years, that was the path I believed I would follow. I was drawn to the legal profession because of its intellectual rigor, its commitment to justice, and its ability to shape outcomes for individuals and organizations.

But careers, much like life itself, rarely follow a perfectly straight line.

Today, I work in Legal Operations—a discipline that sits at the intersection of law, business strategy, and technology. My journey into this field was not something I initially planned, yet it has become a path that aligns deeply with who I am: someone who naturally enjoys solving problems and improving systems.

Looking back, my story is not just about discovering a career in Legal Operations. It is about resilience, faith, growth, and demonstrating to my children that where you begin does not determine where you can go.

Where the Journey Began

Sometimes in life, we do not get to choose where our journey starts.

I grew up in foster care, navigating circumstances that were outside of my control. Like many children in the system, stability and predictability were not always guaranteed. Yet those early experiences shaped the person I would become in ways I did not fully understand at the time.

Living through those challenges taught me resilience. It also taught me how to adapt, how to think critically, and how to keep moving forward even when the path ahead was unclear.

Perhaps most importantly, it taught me how to look for solutions.

When systems around you are imperfect, you learn quickly how to navigate them and find ways forward. That mindset—seeing problems not as barriers but as puzzles to solve—has followed me throughout my life and career.

Reflecting on my journey now, I also recognize something deeper. Through every stage of my life, even when I could not see the bigger picture, God was guiding me. At times the path felt uncertain, but looking back, I can see how each experience prepared me for the next step.

The Dream of Practicing Law

Like many students interested in the legal profession, I once envisioned myself becoming an attorney. The idea of advocating for others, interpreting complex laws, and helping people navigate challenging circumstances was incredibly appealing.

My academic journey reflected that goal. I pursued opportunities that would prepare me for a career in law and immersed myself in understanding the legal field.

Yet as I spent more time observing how legal departments functioned, I began to notice something that intrigued me just as much as the legal work itself.

Behind every successful legal team was an operational framework—systems, processes, technologies, and strategies that allowed attorneys to do their work effectively.

When those systems worked well, legal teams thrived. When they did not, inefficiencies slowed everything down.

The more I observed this, the more I realized that many of the challenges legal departments face are not purely legal problems. They are operational problems.

And operational problems are exactly the kind I enjoy solving.

Discovering Legal Operations

Legal Operations focuses on improving how legal services are delivered within organizations. It involves optimizing processes, implementing technology, managing resources, and using data to support better decision-making.

For someone with a passion for the legal field but also a natural inclination toward systems thinking and problem solving, this discipline felt like a perfect fit.

Legal Operations professionals ask questions such as:

  • How can legal teams work more efficiently?
  • How can technology reduce repetitive tasks?
  • How can legal departments measure and demonstrate their value to the organization?
  • How can processes be redesigned to better manage risk and resources?

Each of these questions represents a challenge waiting to be solved.

What drew me to Legal Operations was the opportunity to influence the effectiveness of an entire legal department rather than focusing on individual legal matters. Improving systems and workflows allows legal teams to operate more strategically and deliver greater value across the organization.

A Career Built on Solving Problems

One of the reasons Legal Operations resonates so strongly with me is that it aligns with something that has always come naturally: solving problems.

Every day in Legal Operations presents new challenges. Legal departments operate in fast-paced environments with complex regulations, tight deadlines, and increasing expectations from the business.

Identifying inefficiencies and finding ways to improve processes is a constant part of the work.

Sometimes that means introducing technology that automates repetitive tasks. Other times it involves redesigning workflows so work moves more efficiently through the department. It may require analyzing data to support better decision-making or collaborating with teams across the organization to improve how legal services are delivered.

For someone who naturally enjoys solving problems, this work is both intellectually engaging and deeply rewarding.

The Growing Role of Legal Operations

Over the past decade, Legal Operations has become an essential function within many organizations. Legal departments are increasingly expected to operate with the same level of efficiency, accountability, and strategic alignment as other business units.

As a result, Legal Operations professionals play a critical role in several areas:

Process Optimization

Legal departments often handle large volumes of work. Streamlining workflows helps attorneys focus on complex legal issues rather than administrative tasks.

Technology Implementation

Modern legal departments rely on a growing ecosystem of tools—from contract lifecycle management systems to analytics platforms. Legal Operations professionals help evaluate and implement these technologies.

Data and Metrics

Tracking key performance indicators such as contract turnaround time, matter volume, and outside counsel spend helps legal leaders make informed strategic decisions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Legal Operations professionals frequently partner with teams across finance, IT, and compliance to ensure legal processes align with broader organizational goals.

In many ways, Legal Operations serves as the strategic backbone that enables legal departments to perform at their highest level.

The Role That Inspires Me Most: Being a Mother

While my professional journey has been meaningful, the role that motivates me most deeply is being a mother.

I am a mother of nine—eight boys and one girl. My children are the greatest inspiration in my life.

My journey is not just about building a career; it is about showing them what is possible.

Growing up in foster care meant I could not control where my story began. But today, I am actively creating a different journey for myself and for my family.

I want my children to see that our beginnings do not have to define our future. Through perseverance, faith, and determination, it is possible to create new opportunities and new paths forward.

Every step I take in my career is also a lesson for them—that hard work matters, resilience matters, and faith matters.

Faith and Perspective

When I reflect on my journey—from foster care to building a career in the legal industry—I recognize that I did not walk this path alone.

God has guided me through every stage of my life.

There were moments when the path forward felt uncertain, but each experience helped shape the person I am today. Looking back, I can see how those moments of challenge were also moments of preparation.

Even today, I continue to trust that God is guiding my steps as I grow in my career and continue building opportunities for my family.

That perspective gives me both humility and gratitude. It reminds me that every challenge can carry purpose and that growth often comes from the most unexpected places.

Embracing the Path Ahead

My journey into Legal Operations was not something I originally planned. At one time, I believed that becoming an attorney was the only way to contribute meaningfully to the legal profession.

But discovering Legal Operations revealed another path—one that allows me to combine my passion for the legal industry with my strengths in strategy, organization, and problem solving.

This field allows me to help legal teams operate more effectively while contributing to the broader goals of the organizations they serve.

More importantly, it allows me to continue growing, learning, and building a future that once seemed uncertain.

And through it all, I hope my journey shows my children—and others—that where you start does not determine where you can go.

With faith, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace unexpected opportunities, it is possible to build a future far greater than you once imagined.
