Posture and Personal Branding – Two faces of Modern Legal Leadership
For years – decades 😉 – most in-house counsels have focused on expertise, precision, drafting skills and control.
And, don’t get me wrong, that’s necessary, but we are in 2025, close to 2026, and this is no longer enough.
Nowadays, being a great lawyer means more than mastering the law.
It means knowing how to make your expertise visible and how to embody it with conviction.
That’s where personal branding and posture come in: two sides of the same leadership coin.
It’s all about marketing yourself and YES … you read me well!
Let me break it down.
1. Personal Branding: a strategy, not vanity
When I speak about personal branding, some lawyers still react as if I’m talking about self-promotion.
But personal branding is not a coquetry, it’s a strategy.
Think of it like a product on the market.
The best-known brands aren’t always the best in absolute terms, but they are clear, consistent, and recognizable.
They know who they are, what they promise, and how they show it.
You have some iconic brands, such as Ferrari … clear, consistent, recognizable, colored … they embed everything, one word – their name – and you have the picture before you.
For lawyers, it’s the same.
Your personal brand is how people identify and remember you:
- Clarity: what you stand for.
- Consistency: how you express it.
- Proof: what you deliver.
Without that clarity, your talent stays invisible.
And invisible value doesn’t weigh much in the boardroom.
Personal branding is not ego, it’s professional positioning.
In the US, many law schools already teach it.
In Europe, and in my country (France), we are more looking at it with weird faces 😉
But in a world where everyone is overloaded with information, clarity is no longer optional, it’s leadership.
2. Posture: the essence of leadership
If personal branding is what people see, posture is what they feel.
Posture is not a title or a style. It’s a stance, the ability to project trust, direction, and calm authority.
It’s what allows a General Counsel, or Chief Legal Officer, whatever the title, to be both a guardian and a partner, to protect while enabling.
And here’s the key: posture doesn’t come from the General Management.
It comes from you legal leader.
And spoiler: it’s not granted, it’s built, by you!
A legal leader defines its posture through clarity, courage, and coherence.
Through the ability to make decisions, to stand firm when needed, and to embody the role beyond the function.
You can’t delegate posture. You have to own it.
Posture also has nothing to do with personality.
You don’t need to be extroverted or outspoken to have a strong presence.
Posture is an inner alignment, between what you think, what you say, and what you do.
3. When personal branding & posture align
A few days ago, I wrote:
“Posture without branding is hidden talent. Branding without posture is just noise.”
From my humble opinion, that sums it up.
For the in-house counsel, personal branding is what gives visibility.
For the legal leader, posture is what gives legitimacy.
The two reinforce each other.
A good personal brand communicates your value clearly.
A strong posture makes that value credible.
Together, they create alignment, the mark of a true legal leader.
Let’s be honest: the most respected legal professionals are not those who talk the most, but those who embody what they stand for, consistently and visibly.
4. And in practice?
For an in-house counsel:
- Define your field, your message, your promise.
- Make it simple to understand and easy to remember.
- Keep your communication consistent: tone, format, examples.
For a legal leader:
- Work on posture every day.
- Build presence, not noise.
- Don’t wait for validation from the CEO or the EXCO, lead from within.
When branding and posture align, you move from being a functional expert to becoming a reference.
The posture makes you a leader. The brand makes you visible.
Final Thought
Posture and personal branding are not trends. They’re the language of leadership in a transformed profession.
AI, LegalOps, automation — all of it accelerates our work, and our own transformation.
But posture and communication are what make us credible and human.
So, if you’re an in-house lawyer in 2025:
- Work on your brand … to be seen.
- Strengthen your posture … to be followed.
Because at the end of the day, no one can embody your role for you.
It’s not your function that makes you a leader, it’s the way you stand in it.
