Reframing Fear and Overwhelm: My Conversation with Claire Parsons on Building a Career with Intention
So many lawyers I meet are overwhelmed, not just by the workload, but by the expectations, the mental pressure, and the feeling that business development has to feel like a performance.
In my recent BE THAT LAWYER episode, I had the chance to sit down with Claire Parsons, an attorney, author, and mindfulness teacher who has a refreshing take on how lawyers can manage stress, build resilience, and show up in their careers with intention.
Here are a few insights that really stood out:
Mindfulness Builds Emotional Muscle
Claire shared how even one minute of mindfulness a day, yes, just one, can change the game. It’s not about eliminating stress, but about learning how to process it differently. Through simple practices like breathwork and body scans, lawyers can create space between stress and reaction, and respond with clarity rather than reactivity.
Fear of Rejection Isn’t the Enemy—It’s a Signal
One of the most powerful things Claire said was that fear, especially fear of rejection in business development, is something we can learn to manage. It’s not a character flaw, it’s a mental habit. Mindfulness helps us face those moments and move forward anyway, grounded in purpose.
You Don’t Have to Be Someone You’re Not
Claire and I talked a lot about how introverts (and really, anyone who feels awkward about “selling”) can approach business development in a more authentic way. When you come from a place of service and curiosity, instead of pressure or performance, your efforts resonate more deeply, and feel a whole lot better.
If you’re looking for a more grounded, values-aligned way to practice law and grow your business, you’re going to get a lot out of this conversation. Listen to the full conversation.
