What got us here won’t get us there

We live in a strange moment. On one hand, some voices in the legal world claim AI won’t change much. “It’s just another tool.” On the other, others are gripped by panic: Will lawyers be replaced? Will entire departments disappear?

Both reactions are understandable and both are incomplete. The panic often comes from yesterday’s logic, a logic built for a world where predictability, precedent, and perfection were rewarded. But if we try to understand today, let alone tomorrow, with yesterday’s thinking, we become vulnerable, because we’re out of sync with the direction the world is heading.

The real risk: Not AI, but inertia

The biggest threat to the legal sector isn’t ChatGPT. It’s clinging to outdated mental models. It’s asking “Which AI tool should we buy?” instead of “What kind of legal value will still matter in two or five years?” It’s mistaking surface-level digitization for real transformation. Tech adoption is not transformation. Buying software is not strategy. And efficiency is not a substitute for relevance. Law has long been about managing risk and ensuring compliance. Clients however want advisors who can think ahead, navigate complexity, and provide clarity in a chaotic world.

That shift requires a new kind of legal logic. One that is:

  • Adaptive, not defensive: Comfort with change must become a core competency.
  • Strategic, not procedural: Understanding business models, data, behavior, and ecosystems is no longer optional.
  • Human-centered, not hierarchy-centered: Clients care about outcomes, impact, and trust. Not titles. Not tradition.

A moment of reinvention: the first step is not tech. It’s thinking

The legal profession has a choice: double down on what used to work, or rethink its foundations. That doesn’t mean abandoning legal rigor or ethical standards. It means expanding our thinking. Moving beyond legal answers to societal questions. Embracing cross-disciplinary collaboration. Training future lawyers to lead change, instead of resisting it.

This is a moment to move from status to substance. From rigid silos to fluid teams. From legal certainty to legal creativity. Transformation doesn’t begin with a procurement plan or a pilot project. It begins with mindset. The question isn’t “What’s the next tool?” but “What kind of firm do we want to build?”

Are we preparing for a future that looks like a slightly faster version of the past? Or are we ready to design something better:  more relevant, more inclusive, more impactful?

The future of law isn’t being written in code. It’s being shaped by courage, clarity, and the willingness to rethink.
